What Latino History Teaches Us About Our Politics—Lecture and Reception

October 29 @ 2:15 pm - 3:30 pm

Geraldo Cadava

Considering the pivotal role that Latinos will play in the 2024 election, Professor Geraldo Cadava (Northwestern University) will draw from his current book project to discuss how the past 500 years of Latino history shape how we think about Latino politics in the present. A reception in the Brooklyn College Library’s Kimmich Room will follow.

Cadava is the author of two books on borderlands and Latino history: Standing on Common Ground: The Making of a Sunbelt Borderland and The Hispanic Republican: The Shaping of a Political Identity From Nixon to Trump. He’s now at work on an overview of Latino history that focuses on the dynamics of colonialism, and how Latinos are both colonizers and colonized. He hosts the “Writing Latinos” podcast for Public Books and is a contributing Writer for The New Yorker.

More information, including free electronic access to Cadava’s books and articles, is available here.

Professor Cadava’s lecture will be part of a two-day residency on campus being hosted by the Brooklyn College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. In addition to the public lecture, Cadava will hold several private meetings with students and faculty.
