Community Building

The Immigrant Student Success Office (ISSO) believes that a sense of community is essential for feeling supported, seen, and heard. We connect students with one another and integrate them into the larger Brooklyn College family, enabling them to grow not only as students but as whole individuals. At ISSO, we view our diverse student population as our greatest strength, and we focus on programming that celebrates individuality while building connections.

Why Community Building Matters

For immigrant, undocumented, and first-generation students, belonging to a supportive community can make a profound difference in their college experience. It fosters confidence, builds meaningful relationships, and provides the foundation for academic and personal success.

Programming That Builds Connections

ISSO fosters a sense of belonging and connection through events and programs designed to integrate students into campus life, supported by the Division of Student Affairs, student clubs such as the BC Dream Team and the Undergraduate Student Government, and other academic partners. Our community-building programs are designed to create a welcoming space where students can share their experiences, celebrate their heritage, and develop skills that extend beyond the classroom. Key initiatives include:

  • Lounge Hour: A weekly gathering where students come together in a relaxed setting to share what’s on their mind, discuss challenges, and offer support to one another. Lounge Hour is a space for open dialogue and camaraderie.
  • Multicultural Food and Expression Events: These events highlight the rich diversity of our community, inviting students to share their culture through food, art, and performances, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.
  • Celebrating Heritage and Personal Interests: ISSO hosts events that honor cultural traditions, milestones, and unique personal interests, creating opportunities for students to express themselves and feel recognized.

Leadership and Skill Development

In addition to fostering connections, we emphasize leadership development and practical skill-building:

  • Leadership Opportunities: Students are encouraged to take active roles in planning and executing events, helping them build confidence and develop their leadership abilities.
  • Work-Translatable Skills: Programs focus on skills such as event coordination, public speaking, and teamwork—valuable assets for both academic success and future careers.

A Space to Belong and Grow

ISSO’s community-building efforts are more than just events—they are a testament to the power of connection. By creating spaces where students can be themselves, share their stories, and support one another, we empower them to grow both individually and as part of a community.
