Federal Work-Study Program

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program is a need-based federal student financial aid program available for undergraduate and graduate students that:

  • serves as a source of educational financial assistance to students,
  • offers a training ground where students can work between six and 20 hours weekly to gain practical experience,
  • encourages students to participate in community-service–based organizations, and
  • provides students an opportunity to participate in the Family Literacy Program (formerly America Reads Program).

To be eligible for Federal Work-Study, students must:

  • meet the Basic Eligibility criteria,
  • have financial need based on their SAI and Cost of Attendance, and
  • be enrolled in at least six credits at the time of job placement.

Summer Work-Study

Continuing students may be able to utilize work-study in the summer. Interested continuing students should e-mail the FWS unit to determine if they meet eligibility to use Summer Federal Work-Study. Students who opt to work for the summer utilize FWS that was allocated for the fall and spring terms; consequently, there is no guarantee that additional funds for fall/spring placement will be available. Note that FWS job opportunities in the summer are more limited than in the fall and spring semesters.

FWS Appeal Requests

Federal Work-Study offers are initially made during the packaging process. Due to limitations on the FWS allocation, not all eligible students will receive an FWS offer.

Any student who did not receive a Federal Work-Study offer may submit an electronic appeal request through Dynamic Forms using the FWS Appeal Request Form. Appeal approvals depend on available funds, the student’s enrollment, financial aid need, other aid on the package, and other program requirements. Submission of an appeal does not guarantee an FWS offer can or will be made.
