Program Overview

As an art student, you can explore cartoon illustration, digital art, drawing, fabric art, interactive media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, among other media. The department offers a suite of studios and workrooms, including state-of-the-art digital labs; a pristine printmaking studio; photography labs; woodworking, metal, and ceramic facilities; and naturally lit painting studios—all in which you can use to express your creative vision.

Where You'll Go

With training in studio art, you could go on to be an animator, art director, graphic designer, industrial designer, photographer, or many other professions.

Major Requirements (41–42 Credits)

The art history major is writing intensive.

The department chair, with the approval of the chair of the department’s undergraduate curriculum committee, may allow substitutions for one or more of these requirements consistent with the educational goals of the program.

Art 1050 or [Core Studies 2.1] or Core Curriculum 1120 or Art 1010.

Art 2210, 2211, and 3066 .

Six additional credits in art history courses.

Twenty-four additional credits in studio art courses chosen from at least four of the following subject areas:

  • Digital art
  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Photography
  • Printmaking
  • Sculpture

Special topics and honors courses in the above subject areas can count toward the fulfillment of the subject-area requirements with permission of the instructor and the chair.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize the design elements necessary to create a work of art (line, shape, form, color, texture, proportion).
  • Demonstrate familiarity with fundamental skills necessary to create artwork in a specific media.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with contemporary or historical references to existing works of art.
  • Able to create art that reflects an original voice (an individualized and informed perspective).

Fifteen credits in digital art chosen from the courses below:

Art 2560, 2561, 2562, 2723, 2811, 2812, 2820, 2821, 2822, 3812, and 3814

Special topics and honors courses in digital art can count toward the fulfillment of the subject-area requirements with permission of the instructor and the chair.

The digital art concentration credits count toward the studio art course distribution requirement.
