Janet Elise Johnson is the 2023–25 Endowed Chair in Women’s and Gender Studies.
Since 2006, Brooklyn College has supplemented its rich curriculum and programming in women’s and gender studies by hiring a leading scholar to serve in the role of Visiting Endowed Chair in Women’s and Gender Studies. Endowed chairs demonstrate their commitment to diversity and inclusiveness through their research, teaching, and/or service at Brooklyn College.
Endowed chairs teach and advise students in four courses during the year, including the introductory Women’s and Gender Studies course each semester, courses in their specialty, and a preferred course in feminist theories. Courses may be cross-listed with WGST-affiliated interdisciplinary programs (Africana Studies, Children and Youth Studies, Judaic Studies, and Puerto Rican and Latino Studies) and departments in the humanities, social sciences, and arts. They also share the commitment of the faculty in building the visibility of the WGST Program by organizing workshops, lecture series, and public discussions that involve students, faculty, and community members.
