The B-NETS program is a two-year program. The program for Fellows begins in the summer immediately following completion of the second (sophomore) year in college. Thus, students interested in becoming B-NETS Fellows must apply to the program in the second semester of their sophomore year (or equivalent in credits earned). Transfer students who will be entering Brooklyn College or Medgar Evers College as juniors are eligible to become Fellows but are required to participate in the summer program before they start classes as juniors.

In addition to providing opportunities during the academic year and the first summer in research labs at Brooklyn College or Downstate Medical Center, in the second summer (as rising seniors), B-NETS Fellows apply for summer research placements at one of 10 partner research institutions with NIH T-32 training grants in neuroscience or other similar programs. These summer research placements provide research experience and introduce Fellows to the environment of research in doctoral institutions. They also introduce students to contacts who can support Fellows in the preparation of applications to such doctoral programs early in their senior year. Fellows are expected to matriculate in a doctoral program immediately after their graduation from Brooklyn College or Medgar Evers College.

As long as Fellows are in good standing academically and are complying with the requirements of full participation in the B-NETS program, they will receive a monthly salary, including fringe benefits. The program also supports supplies for research, and funding for travel to summer research placements and professional and student conferences. The program does not fund tuition costs for enrollment as full-time students, so students are encouraged to apply for all financial aid for which they are eligible.
