Having your student go from high school to Brooklyn College is a momentous occasion and puts him or her on a path of self-discovery, greater independence, and growth. In your role as college parents and guardians, you can provide support as they identify new opportunities and experiences, and further develop their abilities. Find ways to inspire them to plan, assess, and seek out college resources that are available to aid in their success. Encourage them to be self-reliant and take an active role in their college experience. Ask them about their college classes and experiences; however, understand that part of their independence involves control over their academic records (GPA, transcripts, discipline records); this information is provided to the student only and not the parent or guardian. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) laws prevent college officials from disclosing information relating to these matters, unless your student chooses to sign a waiver.
Brooklyn College is committed to values and policies that enhance respect for individuals and their cultures.
