The CUNY Haitian Studies Institute at Brooklyn College offers its deepest sympathy to all Haitians who are feeling grief-stricken following the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday, August 14, 2021. The 7.2 magnitude quake destroyed several towns in Haiti’s southern peninsula, leaving thousands of people dead and injured, and many more in need of urgent medical care and shelter. According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, some 50 miles west from the densely populated capital city of Port-au-Prince, where more than 300,000 people died in the January 2010 earthquake. Haiti sits on many seismic fault lines, including the Enriquillo-Plaintain Garden fault zone that triggered the current quake, as well as the one which leveled the nation’s capital on January 12, 2010. Thus, Haiti needs to design and implement a comprehensive plan to help mitigate the disastrous impacts of all natural phenomena, including hurricanes, floods, and droughts. The CUNY Haitian Studies Institute at Brooklyn College stands with the people of Haiti in demanding that the Haitian government ensure that all available resources be equitably and fairly distributed in this time of crisis. We also ask that other countries and all friends offer and deliver their solidarity and assistance with the utmost respect for human dignity and the nation’s sovereignty.
