Supporting Language Learners: Reading Strategies

October 12, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

In the first of this two-part Supporting Language Learners workshop series, we will discuss how to teach and encourage reading strategies that support students learning new languages—be it English, a language other than English, or the linguistic code of a new academic discipline. The goals of this workshop series are:

  1. to facilitate dialogue around pedagogical practices that encourage the success of multilingual students and prepare faculty to recognize and approach the challenges ELLs face with empathy and understanding, and
  2. to demonstrate how classroom techniques that support ELLs will make a difference for all your students, no matter their first language.

In this workshop focused on reading strategies, we will cover activities, exercises, and prompts that include collaborative glossary making, teaching annotation strategies, and reading aloud, as well as offer ideas for resources and strategies you can recommend to students needing extra support. If you want to help your students get the most out of their assigned readings, no matter your discipline, this workshop is for you.

Stay tuned for the second part of this series, focused on writing strategies, in the spring!
