Dr. Bergen has earned three CUNY degrees, and is a proud alumnus of Brooklyn College.  He has overseen operations of the SLHC for over 20 years, and considers himself fortunate to be part of an incredible team of professionals who contribute to three academic programs which utilize services within the SLHC: the B.A. program in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and two CAA accredited graduate programs, the M.S. program in Speech-Language Pathology and the doctoral Au.D program in Audiology.  His responsibilities include management of a variety of services provided by licensed audiologists and speech-language pathologists, provision of clinical education for CUNY students, continuing education for faculty, staff, and alumni, and informational services for the communities within Brooklyn College and for neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn.

Michael currently serves on several professional committees including those of the New York State Speech Language Hearing Association (NYSSLHA), and has previously held positions on NYSSLHA’s Board of Directors, including President of the Association.  Dr. Bergen has chaired or served on committees at the university, local, state and national levels, including those of the Brooklyn College Alumni Association, ASHA, AAA, CAPCSD and the Greater New York Council of Academic Clinical Educators. Michael has authored or co-authored various scholarly publications, was co-author of ASHA’s Audiology Scope of Practice, and is a past recipient of both the New York City Speech Language Hearing Association’s “Clinician of the Year” and NYSSLHA’s “Distinguished Service Award.”  Dr. Bergen has served as Principal Investigator or co-PI on a number of grant ventures which have resulted in approximately a million dollars in funding for a variety of projects including program development, scholarships, workforce development, and assorted studies in clinical assessment, supervision, interprofessional practice, early intervention and diversity in communication sciences and disorders.
