Earning a degree in childhood, bilingual, or special education equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a nurturing learning environment in urban elementary schools.
Childhood, Bilingual, and Special Education
As a student in the School of Education, you will complete internships in public and/or private schools throughout the New York City region. The internship is a 14-week, full-time, supervised experience designed to hone the requisite skills and knowledge to work as a childhood education teacher.
The Magner Career Center has a wealth of information on everything you need to get started in your career, help with résumés, an internships database, job fairs, etc.
If you have chosen a career in childhood education, you will be working with elementary school-age children (grades 1–6). Your job will be to understand students’ needs, to work with their parents, and to collaborate with other teachers and educators to create a nurturing and rigorous learning environment so that all students reach their highest potential.
To determine which educational environment—public school, independent school, or after school—best suits your strengths and preferences, you can engage in and network with faculty and alumni.
Getting to know diverse types of schools and educational environments, through fieldwork placements during your major and through conversations with your peers, will help you get a better understanding of what type of setting you would like to work in.
