In Lebanon, traumas of histories and challenges of everyday life continue to shape identities long after the decades-long Civil War ended in 1992. Wounds have been revealed and re-opened by the Arab Spring protests and the 2020 port explosion in Beirut as well as the ongoing regional conflicts.
Beirut to Brooklyn represents the first steps in an extended project, creating cross-cultural dialogue through shared life stories, bringing together the voices of CUNY students with those of students and communities around the world. The work represented here gives diverse perspectives on growing up in Lebanon’s intensely multicultural society in the present time, as well as a view of globalization from below.
