Dear Alumni and Friends, Brooklyn College, like all higher educational institutions, has faced an unprecedented time of challenge since March. At that time, life as we all knew it suddenly and significantly changed. Since then, our virtual campus community has come together to ensure that we continue our critical mission of educating our 18,000 students. While many things have changed, this has become more important than ever. Our campus is almost entirely closed as nearly all classes are operating in a remote fashion, but it has been inspiring to see our #BCFamily rise to the occasion to bring joy to our alumni, students, and colleagues during this time. Exciting things continue to happen with our campus community. This summer, we welcomed two new Deans in our Murray Koppelman School of Business and our School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. We also welcomed a new Executive Director of the Barry R. Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema. You can read about all of them in this issue. Feirstein kicked off the new semester with a special event for students featuring Academy and Emmy Award–nominated writer and director Reginald Hudlin. Koppelman launched the semester with a webinar on the COVID-19 Response and Recovery for Small Businesses and Nonprofits in New York City. This fall, our excellent national rankings continue unabated. Brooklyn College was recently recognized for the third year in a row by U.S. News and World Report as the most Ethnically Diverse college campus in the country, and the College was included in Princeton Review’s 2021 edition of The Best 386 Colleges. In addition, Business Insider ranked Brooklyn College 11th in the country for providing the best return on students’ investment, and The Wall Street Journal just listed Brooklyn College among the top 25 public colleges in the northeast for providing a top-rate education. This online issue of Brooklyn College Magazine celebrates just a few of the alumni, faculty, and students who are doing excellent work in their disciplines, in other countries, in newsrooms, in labs, and in classrooms (both remote and in person). We stand proud of them and all of you as alumni of this great institution. Warm regards, Michelle
