Bringing the World Into the Classroom: Using Oral History and Interview Assignments in Your Courses

Have you ever considered integrating an interview or oral history assignment into your classes? Asking students to interview friends, family members, neighbors, or coworkers can help them learn from the brilliance of everyday people and think in new ways about research, writing, and the world around them. The Brooklyn College Listening Project was founded in 2015 to help instructors devise assignments and teach students the basics of interviewing and oral history, including composing questions, managing recording technology, preserving interviews, and addressing the ethical considerations of this work.

Join us on Zoom for a workshop on using interview and oral history assignments in your courses, presented by Joseph Entin and faculty from the Brooklyn College Listening Project (Phil Napoli, Naomi Schiller). We will introduce you to the basics and then do some collective brainstorming about possible assignments. All are welcome, whether you are a complete newcomer to oral history or have experience.
