Haitian Navigators of the Northern Caribbean: Race, Agency, Power

April 11 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

In this lecture, Jeffrey S. Kahn, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of California, Davis, explores the history of Haitian seafaring over the 20th and 21st centuries, how it survived in the face of intensive maritime policing designed to limit the mobility of Black Haitian subjects and how understanding this oceanic history reveals a great deal about how Haitians have shaped the geographies, economies, and politics of the northern Caribbean.
