I am thrilled to share the latest edition of our alumni magazine with you, in which we explore the transformational power of a Brooklyn College education. In a recent op-ed for Crain’s New York Business, I outlined the many benefits of a Brooklyn College education—from affordable tuition to quality academics to the fact that the college is part of CUNY, which propels almost six times as many low-income students into the middle class as all Ivy League colleges, Stanford, Duke, M.I.T., and the University of Chicago combined. In an era in which the value of higher education is easily questioned, Brooklyn College’s positive economic impact is irrefutable. A recent study found that Brooklyn College enriches the lives of students, the regional economy, and society. The average Brooklyn College bachelor’s degree graduate will see annual earnings that are $41,200 higher than someone with only a high school diploma. Over a working lifetime, this increase amounts to $1.7 million in higher earnings. Our graduates go on to contribute to the local and regional economies as well. Thousands are employed in New York City, generating $2.6 billion in added income for the regional economy—the equivalent of supporting 20,533 jobs. By creating a more prosperous economy, the broader society also benefits. We are devoting this spring’s issue to stories of social and economic transformation. There is perhaps no better example of a catalyst for such change than the Magner Career Center, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Established through a generous gift from Marge Magner ’69, the center has become a vital hub connecting students with alumni, internships, jobs, and immeasurable opportunities. Through this story and others, you’ll hear from alumni just like you who reap the benefits of a degree from Brooklyn College and who give back to it in deeply meaningful ways. Our alumni ranks are only getting bigger. As we come to the end of this academic year, let us congratulate our 2024 graduates and welcome them into the family of more than 165,000 alumni who carry out a legacy of giving back to support intergenerational success.
