Program Overview

In this minor, you will explore human communication and disorders. You will be trained to become a thoughtful and effective communicator who is mindful of how people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds behave, speak, and communicate. You’ll develop a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, and become familiar with the disorders that affect the ability to communicate.

Where You'll Go

With this minor, you can complete some prerequisite courses required for graduate degrees in communication sciences or gain a foundation in adjacent fields in the medical and allied health professions, education, and behavioral sciences. With a core competence in integrating information from the areas of human development, psychology, cognitive science, biology, acoustics, and language sciences, you could also set yourself apart as a candidate for opportunities in advertising, corporate communications, human resources, marketing, public affairs, public relations, and publishing.

Minor Requirements (12 Credits)

  • All of the following: Communication Arts, Sciences, and Disorders 1176 and 1178; and
  • One of the following: Communication Arts, Sciences, and Disorders 1113 or 1179; and
  • One of the following: Communication Arts, Sciences, and Disorders 1635 or 1651.

All courses toward this minor must be completed with a grade of C or higher.
