By declaring a minor in Italian and Italian American studies, you will immerse yourself in Italian language, history, and culture through a variety of courses in religion, film, and literature, among others, covering both Italy and the Italian American world.

Where You'll Go

Declaring a minor allows you to make interdisciplinary connections and explore interests outside of your major. With a minor in Italian and Italian American studies, you’ll set yourself apart as a candidate in a number of professions such as teaching and education, diplomacy, business, government, human resource management, and research, to name just a few.

Minor Requirements (15 Credits)

A program of 15 credits as follows:

  • A minimum of nine credits in advanced courses in Italian 1030 and above
  • With permission of the chair, two of the following courses may be applied toward the minor: ENGL 2003, ENGL 3164, HIST 3024, HIST 3025, ARTD 3030, ARTD 3038, ARTD 3046 MLAN 1310, MLAN 2012, MLAN 2015, MLAN 2150, MLAN 2610, MLAN 3210, MLAN 3360 or MLAN 4500.

It is recommended that the students meet with a department adviser to plan a coherent program of study.

Students might choose a sequence of courses constituting a general survey of

  • Italian and/or Italian American literature;
  • translation studies; or
  • Italian for business.

All courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.

A minimum of nine credits must be completed at Brooklyn College.

The department chair, with the approval of the department’s curriculum committee, may allow substitutions for one or more of the requirements consistent with the educational goals of the program.
