Assistant Professor of English Simanique Moody teamed up with the Marine Park Alliance to co-organize a Kwanzaa event on December 26 at the Carmine Carro Community Center in Marine Park in Brooklyn. The dynamic program included singing, dancing, drumming, storytelling, and audience reflections. Moody spoke about the history of Kwanzaa and introduced the audience to words and phrases in Kiswahili. The seven principles of Kwanzaa were discussed, and children from the audience participated in a deeply moving candle-lighting ceremony. Several Brooklyn College alumni were instrumental in making this event a success. There was a great turnout from the local community, and everyone left feeling inspired and looking forward to next year’s event.
