The Brooklyn College women’s basketball team has transformed from an up-and-coming program, to that of a local powerhouse, as the squad just completed their sixth consecutive winning season, and third straight 20-win year. The Bulldogs finished the 2013–2014 season with an overall mark of 22-8, two games short of the most wins in the program’s history, a record set during the 2012–2013 season, and tying their record of 2011–2012, which was the second most wins for the program.

The team’s overall record over the past three seasons is an astounding, 68-23. Their conference record is even more impressive, as they’ve gone 37-6 over that period.

Making the postseason in each of their last six, the team earned ECAC Metro Championship bids, while going to the championship contest in 2013 and 2014. They also earned trips to the CUNYAC Championship game in 2012 and 2013.

While opening up this year with a modest 3-3 mark, the squad went on a tear, winning nine of their next 10 games, capped by a 39-point win over Purchase on January 22.

The team finished hot as well, winning 10 of their final 13 games, and reaching the championship game of the ECAC Metro Tournament, where they fell to Kean University, 65-53.

“We had a great season,” said Head Coach Alex Lang. “Especially considering that we only had two returning starters from last year, and one of them, Vanessa D’Ambrosi, was injured and did not play. We had contributions from everyone, and our lone returning starter, Nicole Francomano, had a strong season.”

Francomano, a junior who has been a starter on each of the team’s 20-win seasons, led the conference and ranked tenth nationally with 6.2 assists per game. The point guard was named to the All-Conference Team for the second consecutive season, as was center Megan Campbell.

Campbell led the team in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game, as well as 7.5 rebounds per contest.

“We were not a team of superstars,” said Lang. “We have had different players step up for us throughout the season, and that has been the key to our success.”

The Bulldogs had five different players lead them in scoring over the course of the year, and had nine players who notched double figure scoring games.

While the team does have three seniors, the future looks bright as the squad has 10 returnees and Coach Lang and his staff are hard at work recruiting for next season.

“We are thrilled with where our program is right now, but we plan to continue to improve, and are striving to win our conference next year and head to the NCAA Division III Tournament,” said Lang. “I believe we have a team that is focused and will work hard to continue what we have built.”
