June 2020 June 15: Congratulations to Professor Ryan Murelli who has received a generous award from the National Institutes of Health for the project “Development and Exploitation of New Synthetic Strategies for Tropolones.” This grant will fund up to $1.54 million to his lab and Brooklyn College over the next four years to advance the synthesis of tropolones and develop tools and knowledge to establish tropolones as anti-viral therapeutics. May 2020 May 19: Professor Maria Contel publishes “Auranofin-Based Analogues Are Effective Against Clear Cell Renal Carcinoma In Vivo and Display No Significant Systemic Toxicity” in ACS Pharmacology and Translational Science. April 2020 April 10: Congratulations to graduate student Lauren Bejcek (Murelli Lab), a recipient of the Dissertation-Year Fellowship from the CUNY Graduate Center! The award will provide $25,000 to help support her in her final year of thesis study. April 9: Professor Alexander Greer publishes with Professor Joel Liebman ’67 (now at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County) “Why are the elemental nonmetals (F2, Cl2, Br2, I2, S8, P4) of so many hues or of any hues and where is the chromophore? Insight into intera‐X–X bonds” in Photochemistry and Photobiology. Learn how the quantitative skills of a scientist can be brought to bear on stock trading and modeling financial markets. March 2020 March 31: The Chemistry Department congratulates Professor Guillermo Gerona-Navarro, who has received a $1.57M award from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences for the project “Allosteric Modulators of Polycomb Repressive 2 Gene Repression as Potential Therapeutics for the Development of Novel Epigenetic Cancer Therapies.” Part of the projects will be performed in collaboration with Weill Medical College of Cornell University (Professor Ari Melnick) March 21: Assistant Professor Emilio Gallicchio receives the American Chemical Society COMP OpenEye Outstanding Junior Faculty Award March 12: Important Notice to Students: The Chemistry Department will teach all classes (including all lab courses) remotely for the rest of the spring semester. Students will receive detailed instructions soon. Online instruction began on March 19. Instructions for lab check-out procedures will be posted at a later date. March 5: Our very own alumnus Professor Hilal Lashuel ’94, from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, gave the H. Martin Friedman Lecture on March 5. The Friedman Lecture is our most prestigious annual event. Lashuel talked about the most recent advances in uncovering the molecular biology of Alzheimer’s disease and other devastating neurodegenerative diseases caused by protein misfolding. He received a diploma from the Chemistry Department in recognition to his stellar scientific career. February 2020 February 28: In this month’s Chemistry Career Blog, CUNY alumnus Joshua Jones tells us about entering Colorado’s cannabis industry, first as an industrial chemist and then as an entrepreneur creating his own company to provide contract services. Find out about life in the hemp and marijuana gold rush as companies struggle to create high quality, safe products for a new market! February 10: The Chemistry Department mourns the loss of Professor Emeritus Milton J. Rosen, professor of chemistry and director of the Surfactant Research Institute at Brooklyn College, who passed away on February 2 at 99 years of age and just nine days away from his 100th birthday.
