“And Still We Rise”: Gender Studies in Challenging Times—50 Years of Women’s and Gender Studies at Brooklyn College

October 17 @ 2:15 pm - 3:30 pm

Amy Reid

Amy Reid comes to us from New College of Florida, where she is a professor of French and, until recently, director of the Gender Studies Program. Since 2023, she has taken a lead in shaping faculty pushback against the implementation of the statewide ban on DEI, which has led to the “abolishment” of the college’s Gender Studies Program and, most recently, the student-run Gender and Diversity Center. Her teaching at New College has focused on French and Francophone literature, in particular works from sub-Saharan Africa and the diaspora. She is an accomplished translator, working with authors from Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo, and Haiti. She is currently on leave from New College and working with PEN America, as part of the Freedom to Learn team, focused on pushing back against gag orders and DEI bans that limit freedom of expression and academic freedom in higher education.

President Michelle J. Anderson will deliver opening remarks.

This event will be livestreamed, and and a recording of it housed on the Wolfe Institute’s YouTube channel.
