Faculty and Staff Book Group Discussion of Maya Wind’s “Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom”

September 25 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Book cover

A faculty and staff reading group about anthropologist Maya Wind’s urgent new book, Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom (Verso, 2024). Drawing on archival and ethnographic research, Wind’s book explores how Israeli universities’ academic disciplines, degree programs, campus infrastructure, and research laboratories violate Palestinian rights to education, systemically repress academic freedom, and support Israel’s settler-colonial policies.

We are meeting in two sessions to discuss Wind’s book in preparation for her visit to CUNY on Monday, November 11. We will also host an in-person watch party at Brooklyn College for Wind’s talk, which will be livestreamed from the Graduate Center.

Co-sponsored by the departments of Political Science, Puerto Rican and Latino Studies, Secondary Education, and Sociology, and the Brooklyn College chapter of the PSC.
