Pre-Modern/Post-Modern: Using Contemporary Performance to Think About Medieval Art

December 3 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

How can we use the hyper-modern to understand the super ancient? How can performance art made in 1970 help us understand art made in 1070 and vice versa? In this talk, Professor of History Lauren Mancia will draw comparisons between 20th-century performance art and 11th- and 12th-century medieval Christian art and ritual, using each period to illuminate the other, so that we (as modern people) can better understand both the impulses of medieval people and the motives of art makers today.
