This interactive workshop, lead by Dorell Thomas (English) invites faculty from different disciplines to consider course design that revolves around a set of central questions or problems to build students’ skills in critical reading and writing. Instructors will learn how to ground a course in ideas that reflect the lived experiences of real people, and how to pair those ideas with assigned texts that make those initial questions relevant to students’ lives. Disciplinary content will be framed as something practical and connected to students’ experience. This workshop will model sample questions and strategies to encourage student response. Workshop participants will then apply this approach to their own discipline and classes and leave with practical strategies for classroom implementation.
