March 2021 On May 4 at 11 a.m., Prof. Alexandra Juhasz invites Stephen Winter and Vivian Kleiman to join the students of FILM 2120 The Nonfiction Film for a conversation titled Black Gay Men on Film that will explore how the history and present of documentary aligns with the (in)visibility of Black people. Tongues Untied (Marlon Riggs, 1989) and Jason and Shirley (Stephen Winter, 2015)—creative, expansive, beautiful films focusing on gay black male oppression, community, and liberation will be the focus. Takeshi Fukunaga joined Ava DuVernay, Heperi Mita, and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers for Dream On: New Cinema, New Voices!, part of Berlinale Talents, the Berlin International Film Festival’s talent development programme for the world’s top 200 emerging filmmakers and series creators. February 2021 Destiny Blackwell ’21 was awarded the Excellence in our Midst Award from the Women’s and Gender Studies program for fall 2020.
