As we stand together at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, I am reminded that Brooklyn College has always been—and remains—a place for changemakers. In this edition of the alumni magazine, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of those alumni who have forged paths of progress and inspiration.

In this issue, we honor the legacy of Shirley Chisholm ’46, the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. Chisholm’s groundbreaking work not only paved the way for future generations of leaders but ignited a spirit of activism that continues to resonate today. Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of courage and determination in the face of challenges.

I am also excited to spotlight Ocean Vuong ’12—an award-winning poet, bestselling novelist, and MacArthur “genius” —whose voice has captivated readers around the globe. In this in-depth interview, his reflections on identity, belonging, and resilience, encouraging us to embrace our shared humanity.

You’ll also hear from Luiz Cazares ’18 and Paul Gertner ’66, both of whom are giving back to Brooklyn College in ways that help students finish their degrees and connect to careers.

These stories and others illustrate the incredible breadth of talent that our alumni embody. Each story reminds us that, as members of the Brooklyn College community, we are well-equipped to be the change we want to see in the world—whether through art, politics, business, education, or public service.

As the recent presidential campaign has shown, our nation is in many ways divided. I want to emphasize the importance of engaging with one another across our differences in a spirit of respect and understanding. At Brooklyn College, we celebrate diversity of thought and encourage constructive dialogue. Our alumni community is enriched by various perspectives, and it is through this collective wisdom that we can find common ground and work toward a better future.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Brooklyn College. I am proud to be part of such a vibrant and dynamic community.
