The Brooklyn College Actuarial Society organizes and plans events pertaining to the actuarial field. If you have an interest in the actuarial field and would like to find out more information about our society and the events/activities that we hold throughout the year, feel free to contact us.

Actuaries are highly sought-after professionals who develop and communicate solutions for complex financial issues. They can be viewed as a business professional who analyzes the financial consequences of risk. They use their knowledge of mathematics, statistics, business management, and financial theory to manage risks arising from uncertain future events, especially those of interest to insurance and pension funds management businesses.
Due to the broad range of skills developed throughout their preparation, actuaries are able to find employment at a wide range of businesses and organizations such as the insurance industry, banks and financial institutions, consulting firms, accounting companies, industrial corporations, governmental organizations, hospitals, universities, and employee benefits departments of labor unions or large corporations.
A career as an actuary is simultaneously intellectually stimulating, prestigious, and well compensated, being consistently ranked as one of the best jobs in the United States by a number of sources such as US News & World Report, the Jobs Rated Almanac, and CNN Money, among others.
The Brooklyn College B.S. Program in Actuarial Mathematics, offered by the Department of Mathematics, was devised to provide you with the essential academic background on mathematics, statistics, finance, economics, and business to prepare you for some of the actuarial exams, help you compete for entry-level jobs as an actuary, and assist you with embarking on the successful career path as an actuary.
The program website contains information about what are actuaries, where they work, how to become an actuary, what courses are needed to complete the degree as well as their respective descriptions, and valuable resources that you should check out regarding the actuarial profession.

Thursday, November 21 12:15–4 p.m. Bedford Room, Second Floor, Student Center The Actuarial Society is hosting a joint event with the Accounting Society on networking. More details to come as the event draws closer.
Thursday, September 26 12:30–2 p.m. Amersfort Room, Second Floor, Student Center Attend this event to find out more about Willis Towers Watson (WTW). WTW is a leading global advisory, brokering, and solutions company that helps clients around the world turn risk into a path for growth. Recruiters from WTW will speak about their company and internship program. Recruiters will review, critique, and collect students resumes for upcoming internship opportunities. Tuesday, September 24 12:30–2 p.m. Glenwood Room, Second Floor, Student Center Attend this event to learn more about Zurich, a leading multi-line insurer that serves its customers in global and local markets. Zurich provides a wide range of property, casualty, and life insurance products/services in more than 210 countries and territories. Recruiters from Zurich will speak about their company and internship program. Recruiters will review, critique, and collect students resumes for upcoming internship opportunities. Noon–2 p.m. Alumni Room, fourth floor, Student Center This event was a general interest meeting for students interested in learning more about the actuarial profession and/or joining the Actuarial Society. Attendees spoke with club leaders, asked questions, and found out what events the club was planning to hold this semester.
12:15–2 p.m. Alumni Room, fourth floor, Student Center At this event, there was a gathering of business clubs in a club fair style to showcase different clubs and opportunities available on campus. The Actuarial Society had a table at this event where prospective members could stop by to learn more about the club, ask a variety of questions (which we were delighted to answer), and sign up as new members of our club.
12:30–2 p.m. 3209 Ingersoll Hall This event was conducted by representatives from MetLife who spoke about the company and the actuarial profession. The representatives also sought to recruit students for summer internships.
4–6 p.m. Occidental Room, fifth floor, Student Center The Actuarial Society, in collaboration with SGS Student Government, the SLC, NABA, the Accounting Society, ALPFA, AWIN, the Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Club, Smoothtalkers, and Toastmasters, was pleased to announce the first-ever Business Dining Etiquette event at Brooklyn College. This event aided in the development of students’ professional skills and helped to better prepare them for the workforce environment. Business professional attire was required for this event. Patricia Napier-Fitzpatrick of the School of Etiquette of New York coached attendees through a professional, four-course dinner. Faculty at the Koppelman School of Business and professionals from Ernst & Young were in attendance to simulate a professional networking environment. Our event flyer (pdf) contains the details.
12:30–2 p.m. 3209 Ingersoll Hall Representatives from the New York Life Insurance Company came to speak about the profession and their experiences working at this company, and to collect résumés.
12:30–2:15 p.m. Penthouse Solarium, seventh floor, Student Center We welcomed Scott Goldstein, an actuary from Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, one of the largest mutual life insurance companies in the Untied States. Goldstein gave an overview of the actuarial profession, discussed an assessment project given to entry-level candidates at Guardian, and talked about his experiences working as an actuary. The presentation was from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. After the presentation, Goldstein collected résumés for internship positions for summer 2019 and answered a variety of questions from those who attended the event. 12:30–2 p.m. 130 Ingersoll Hall Extension This was the first event of the fall 2018 semester! At this General Interest Meeting, club leaders provided a comprehensive overview of the actuarial profession, discussed the requirements for the B.S. in actuarial mathematics, and reviewed the exam process. Club leaders hoped to pique members’ interest in the actuarial profession. They discussed how the Society can assist members with obtaining internships. Attendees found out what events the club leaders had planned for this semester. The leaders also conducted a workshop after the meeting, whereby they gave a taste of what it is like to work as an actuary. Our event flyer (pdf) contains the details.
12:30 – 2:15 p.m. 130 New Ingersoll Hall The goal of this event was to bring in actuarial professionals to lead a Q&A panel. Students were be able to ask questions about the actuarial profession, the exam track, and insurance company structure, among other topics.
12:15–2:15 p.m. 1146 Ingersoll Hall At this meeting, prospective members were acquainted with what the Actuarial Society typically does and about the actuarial profession in general. Club leaders discussed what actuarial science is, how students can find internships/jobs, and what events the Society had in store for this semester. This event also served as a preliminary networking event for mathematics students that are interested in the profession or related topics.
12:30–2 p.m. 1146 Ingersoll Hall Representatives Tasso Bountouvas and Sarah Salemi from MetLife discussed the insurance industry, the actuarial profession, and what it is like to be an actuary at a leading insurance company. 12:30–2 p.m. Penthouse Solarium, seventh floor, Student Center New York Life is the largest mutual life insurance company in the United States. Representatives from New York Life discussed actuarial opportunities with one of the largest life insurers in the world. Résumés were collected for summer 2018 internship positions. 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Maroney-Leddy Lounge, fourth floor, Student Center Scott Goldstein, an actuary at Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, gave an overview of the actuarial profession, worked through real-life examples, and discussed an assessment project given to entry-level candidates at his firm. Goldstein also collected résumés for summer internships.

12:30–2:15 p.m. 1309 James Hall Eugene Schloss, a Brooklyn College alumnus who built his own actuarial and benefits consulting firm, Schloss & Co., discussed his career as an actuary and what it took to establish and run his own company, and answered questions about the actuarial profession and about his personal experiences in the industry. 12:30–2 p.m. 1146 Ingersoll Hall Neil Schwarzenberger is our very own campus liaison for the Casualty Actuarial Society. He works as an actuarial analyst and catastrophe modeler at Everest Reinsurance. Schwarzenberger provided valuable insight into the casualty industry. This interactive information session also discussed the dynamics of the actuarial business world. Event Flier (pdf)
Speaker: Scott Goldstein, Guardian Life Insurance Company of America 12:30–2 p.m. 1141 Ingersoll Hall Scott Goldstein, an actuary from Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, gave a brief overview of the actuarial profession and described retirement products and variable annuities with living benefits. Internship spots were still open for the summer. Goldstein collected résumés from interested students at this event. This event was sponsored by the Brooklyn College Math Club and the Brooklyn College Actuarial Society.
12:30–2 p.m. Jefferson-Williams Lounge, 4th Floor, Student Center Attendees were able to learn more about TIAA, a Fortune 100 financial services organization that is the leading retirement provider for people who work in the academic, research, medical, and cultural fields. Auman talked about what actuaries do at TIAA and the unique benefits his company has to offer. This event gave attendees a good grasp of what the actuarial profession is all about. Event Flier (pdf)

MetLife is proud to offer products and services that help individuals, families, and communities around the world expand tomorrow’s possibilities. The representatives talked about what actuaries do at MetLife and the unique benefits their company has to offer. 12:30–2 p.m. Occidental Lounge, 5th Floor, Student Center Those interested in an exciting and prestigious career in actuarial science were encouraged to attend this General Interest Meeting to learn more about how the BCAS can help them. At this meeting, attendees got an overview of the actuarial profession and what BCAS does as a student club, such as holding networking events with professionals at top firms and conducting professional development workshops that teach the technical and interviewing skills needed to land internships/jobs. BCAS usually collaborates with other college offices, such as the Magner Career Center, when it comes to planning and holding career-related events. At regular meetings, we discuss current events and issues that actuaries face today. This event gave attendees the chance to network with fellow Brooklyn College students who are interested in an actuarial career. Speaker: Emil Chacko, Executive Recruiter from Actuarial Careers Inc. 12:30–2 p.m. 1309 James Hall Emil Chacko, executive recruiter from Actuarial Careers Inc., provided his insight on résumés, interviewing, and interacting with recruiters at job fairs. This was a fantastic opportunity to prepare for the Actuarial Society of New York (ASNY) Career Fair that took place on September 25th. 12:30 – 2:00pm Math Seminar Room, 1146 Ingersoll Hall Society of Actuaries staff and a panel of featured actuaries came to speak about the actuarial profession. The meeting consisted of a panel discussion featuring three actuaries from various areas of practice and was moderated by SOA staff (representatives of the Education and Communications/Marketing departments). The featured actuaries were from our local area, currently practicing, and ready to share insights into the daily work of an actuary, how they pursued the actuarial profession, and about opportunities for new actuaries entering the field. SOA staff shared the latest information on the requirements for the ASA, FSA and CERA credentials, insights and resources on exams, e-Learning and grading. Standard presentations were 1.5 hours and included 30-45 minutes for students to ask questions, network and have one-on-one time with panelists and SOA staff. Click here to view the event flyer.

BCAS Welcomes Nick Blitterswyk, CEO of Urban Green Energy International 12:30–2 p.m. Glenwood Room, Student Center Nick Blitterswyk is a former actuary turned entrepreneur who epitomizes the non-traditional career path. 12:30–2 p.m. State Room, 5th floor, Student Center Kaufman is a Brooklyn College alumnus and the managing director of FTI Consulting. He is an insurance professional and fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) with nearly 40 years of experience in executive and consulting roles. Kaufman conducted an interactive session where he shared his valuable expertise and discussed the important steps you can take toward putting yourself on the path to a successful actuarial career. 12:30–2 p.m. Glenwood Lounge, Student Center Mercer is a global consulting leader in talent, health, retirement and investments. Mercer helps clients around the world advance the health, wealth, and performance of their most vital asset—their people. Attendees learned about working as an actuary in one of the top companies in New York. 12:30–2 p.m. 2207 James Hall Don Segal led an interactive session with tips on how to succeed as an actuary. He is an renowned expert in the field. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about what being an actuary entails and to ask Segal any questions you may have about the profession. Speaker: Lucas Rubin, Associate Dean of Academic Programs 12:30–1:30 p.m. 1146 Ingersoll Hall The Brooklyn College Actuarial Society and the Trading Club welcomed Lucas Rubin, Associate Dean of Academic Programs. Rubin will be discussing the possibility of a future Master’s Program in Actuarial Mathematics. He sought to obtain faculty and student feedback. The feedback obtain would be crucial as it would help play a role in the design of a graduate actuarial program at CUNY. Speaker: Mel Feinberg, New York Life 12:30–2 p.m. 404 Whitehead Hall Attendees learned how to develop interview strategies and how to differentiate themselves from other applicants so that they can land the job they want. Special guest speaker Mel Feinberg, a Brooklyn College alumnus who has more than 35 years of work experience as an actuary, provided helpful résumé and interview advice. Feinberg has been in charge of hiring new actuaries for New York Life and has interviewed over 200 applicants for actuarial and other positions.
